Everything you need to know
01What Is a Company-Issued Cell Phone Policy?
A company-issued cell phone policy governs how employees use mobile devices the company provides. It covers who qualifies for a device, acceptable personal use, security and data protection expectations, and responsibilities for care and return. Because these phones often hold sensitive business data and email, the policy ensures devices are used appropriately, protected against loss or breach, and recovered when employment ends.
02Why Companies Need a Company-Issued Cell Phone Policy
Company phones represent a real cost and a security exposure. Without rules, employees may rack up excessive charges, install risky apps, or leave sensitive data unprotected. A clear policy controls spending, enforces encryption and passcode standards, clarifies that the device remains company property, and sets expectations for reasonable personal use. It also supports compliance with data protection laws and simplifies device recovery on departure.
03What a Company-Issued Cell Phone Policy Should Include
Define eligibility and the approval process. Set security requirements such as passcodes, encryption, automatic locking, and mobile device management enrollment. Clarify acceptable personal use, prohibited activities, and rules on roaming and international charges. Explain reporting procedures for lost or stolen phones, expectations for care, and liability for damage. Include return obligations at offboarding and note the company's right to monitor and remotely wipe business data.
