Everything you need to know
01What Is an Employee Relocation Policy?
An employee relocation policy defines the support a company provides when an employee moves for work, whether joining from another city or transferring between locations. It covers which costs are paid, such as moving household goods, temporary accommodation, travel, and settling-in help, along with eligibility rules and any commitment period required in return. The policy makes relocation offers consistent and helps employees plan a major life move with confidence.
02Why Companies Need an Employee Relocation Policy
Relocation is expensive and emotionally demanding, and ad-hoc deals lead to inequity and budget surprises. A structured policy lets you attract talent from other locations, standardize what each level receives, and control total spend. It also protects your investment through clawback clauses if an employee leaves soon after moving. Clear terms reduce negotiation friction during hiring and reassure candidates that the practical burden of moving will be genuinely supported.
03What an Employee Relocation Policy Should Include
Define eligibility by role or distance, and list covered costs: household goods transport, travel for the employee and family, temporary housing duration, and any lump-sum settling allowance. Explain whether support is a reimbursement, a fixed package, or company-arranged. Include a clawback or repayment clause tied to a minimum service period, the tax treatment of relocation benefits, and the documentation and approval steps needed to claim support.
