Everything you need to know

01What Is an Employee Training Policy?

An employee training policy sets out how your organization plans, delivers, and funds learning and development. It covers mandatory training such as compliance and safety, role-specific skill building, and optional professional growth. The policy explains who is eligible, how training is requested or assigned, and how time and costs are handled, so development is treated as a managed program rather than an occasional afterthought.

02Why Companies Need a Training Policy

Skills gaps slow productivity and push good people toward employers who invest in them. A training policy ensures compliance requirements are met on schedule, standardizes onboarding so new hires ramp faster, and signals that you back employee growth. It also controls spending by defining approval limits and expectations, turning ad hoc course requests into a fair, budgeted process aligned with business needs.

03What a Training Policy Should Include

List mandatory training and its frequency, plus role-based and optional development options. Explain how employees request training, who approves it, and any budget caps per person or team. Clarify whether training happens on work time, how completion is tracked, and any repayment terms for expensive courses if someone leaves soon after. Include how training needs are identified through reviews and how outcomes are measured.
