Everything you need to know

01What Is a Workers' Compensation Policy?

A workers' compensation policy explains how a US employer provides benefits to employees who are injured or become ill because of their job. Workers' comp is a state-regulated insurance system that covers medical treatment, a portion of lost wages, and rehabilitation, generally regardless of fault. The policy documents how employees report injuries, how claims are filed and managed, and the protections and responsibilities of both the employee and the employer during recovery.

02Why Companies Need a Workers' Compensation Policy

Nearly every state requires employers to carry workers' compensation insurance, and failing to do so brings heavy fines and personal liability. A clear policy ensures injuries are reported promptly, which speeds treatment and reduces claim costs and fraud. It also protects the company by defining the process, since workers' comp generally provides the exclusive remedy that shields employers from most injury lawsuits. Documented steps help injured employees recover and return to work smoothly and fairly.

03What a Workers' Compensation Policy Should Include

State that coverage is provided as required by state law and outline what it covers: medical costs, wage replacement, and rehabilitation. Explain how employees must report an injury, including timeframes and who to notify, and the steps the employer takes to file the claim with the insurer. Cover the return-to-work process, any light-duty options, anti-retaliation protections for claimants, and where employees can get help with questions about their claim.
