What it measures

3 dimensions, scored separately

Attending

Attending measures whether a candidate notices and gives proper focus to what another person is saying. It matters because missed cues, divided attention and rushed responses often lead to errors, confusion and poor service.

Clarifying

Clarifying measures whether a candidate asks the right follow up questions before acting or forming conclusions. It matters because teams work better when people check details, separate facts from assumptions and define the real issue.

Reflecting

Reflecting measures whether a candidate can restate meaning or emotion accurately to confirm understanding. It matters because people communicate more openly when they feel heard, especially during complaints, conflict or sensitive conversations.

Everything about the Active Listening Test

01What is the Active Listening Test?

This test measures how well a candidate handles common workplace conversations that require careful listening. It focuses on three practical skills: attending, clarifying and reflecting. Candidates review short scenarios and choose the best response, such as how to respond when someone is distracted during a one to one or how to understand a teammate's comment about an unhappy client. The question bank is built around realistic work situations rather than abstract theory, so results are easier to connect to job performance. On Springhire, hiring teams can use it early in the process to compare candidates on communication judgment in a consistent way.

02How does the Active Listening Test work?

Candidates answer 20 situational judgement questions in 10 minutes. Items are drawn from a bank of 60 and randomised per candidate, which helps reduce overexposure. The test is set at an intermediate level, auto scored and designed to show how a person is likely to respond in everyday workplace listening situations.

03Why is the Active Listening Test important to employers?

Poor listening creates avoidable hiring risk. A candidate may sound polished in interview but still miss key details, fail to probe for context or respond in ways that make colleagues and customers feel unheard. This test helps reduce that risk by showing how candidates are likely to listen and respond when information is incomplete, emotional or easily misunderstood.

How to interpret Active Listening Test results

Every candidate report scores each dimension separately. Here is what high and lower scores typically look like at work, and how to use them in your hiring decision.

Attending

High scorers: A high score suggests the candidate stays present, picks up important cues and gives others space to explain before responding.

Lower scorers: A low score suggests the candidate may miss details, divide attention or respond before fully taking in the message.

Clarifying

High scorers: A high score suggests the candidate seeks missing information in a focused way and avoids jumping to conclusions.

Lower scorers: A low score suggests the candidate may assume meaning too quickly or fail to ask the questions needed to understand the issue.

Reflecting

High scorers: A high score suggests the candidate can confirm understanding clearly and show that they grasp both content and tone.

Lower scorers: A low score suggests the candidate may give responses that feel generic, miss emotional context or leave misunderstandings unresolved.
