HR Glossary
What is Discretionary Effort?
The voluntary, above-and-beyond effort an employee chooses to give beyond the minimum requirements of their job, driven by motivation rather than obligation.
Why it matters in hiring
Discretionary Effort comes up whenever teams compare candidates, set policy or report on people data. Getting the definition right keeps decisions consistent, which is the same reason springhire scores every applicant against the same criteria rather than on impression.
