What is Leave of Absence (LOA)?

An employer-approved period of time away from work during which the employee's job is protected. LOAs can be paid or unpaid, mandatory or discretionary, and typically cover medical, family, personal, or military situations that go beyond standard PTO.

Why it matters in hiring

Leave of Absence (LOA) comes up whenever teams compare candidates, set policy or report on people data. Getting the definition right keeps decisions consistent, which is the same reason springhire scores every applicant against the same criteria rather than on impression.
