HR Glossary
What is Positive Action?
Voluntary, lawful steps an employer can take under Sections 158 and 159 of the Equality Act 2010 to address underrepresentation or disadvantage linked to a protected characteristic, without selecting candidates based on that characteristic.
Why it matters in hiring
Positive Action comes up whenever teams compare candidates, set policy or report on people data. Getting the definition right keeps decisions consistent, which is the same reason springhire scores every applicant against the same criteria rather than on impression.
