HR Glossary
What is Proximity Bias?
A cognitive bias where managers favor employees who are physically closer to them in the workplace, giving in-office workers more opportunities, visibility, and favorable evaluations than remote or hybrid colleagues doing equivalent work.
Why it matters in hiring
Proximity Bias comes up whenever teams compare candidates, set policy or report on people data. Getting the definition right keeps decisions consistent, which is the same reason springhire scores every applicant against the same criteria rather than on impression.
