What is Shared Parental Leave?
A UK employment right introduced in 2015 that allows eligible parents to share up to 50 weeks of leave and 37 weeks of pay between them after the birth or adoption of a child, providing flexibility beyond the traditional maternity and paternity leave structure.
Why it matters in hiring
Shared Parental Leave comes up whenever teams compare candidates, set policy or report on people data. Getting the definition right keeps decisions consistent, which is the same reason springhire scores every applicant against the same criteria rather than on impression.
