HR Glossary
What is Shift Differential?
Additional pay provided to employees who work non-standard hours such as evening, night, weekend, or holiday shifts, typically expressed as a percentage or flat dollar amount added to the base hourly rate.
Why it matters in hiring
Shift Differential comes up whenever teams compare candidates, set policy or report on people data. Getting the definition right keeps decisions consistent, which is the same reason springhire scores every applicant against the same criteria rather than on impression.
