Everything you need to know
01What the notice period calculator does
Enter your resignation date, your notice period in days and, if you want to leave early, your monthly salary, and get your last working day and the full buyout amount. It answers the two questions every resignation raises: when can I actually go, and what will it cost to go sooner.
02How the calculation works
Last working day = resignation date + notice period in days. Full buyout = monthly salary ÷ 30 × notice days, which is the amount an employer typically recovers if you serve none of the notice. If you serve part of it, the buyout is proportionate: monthly salary ÷ 30 × days not served. Some employers use basic pay rather than gross for the calculation; check your appointment letter.
03Worked example
Resign on 1 September with a 60-day notice period and a monthly salary of ₹1,00,000. Last working day: 31 October. Full buyout if you leave immediately: ₹1,00,000 ÷ 30 × 60 = ₹2,00,000. If you serve 30 days and buy out the rest, the recovery is ₹1,00,000, usually deducted from your final settlement.
04Negotiating a shorter notice
Employers agree to waive or shorten notice more often than people expect, especially when a handover is complete or a replacement is ready. Offer a written handover plan and a specific date. Ask whether accrued leave can be adjusted against notice, which many Indian companies allow. If a new employer is buying out your notice, get that in the offer letter, and remember the reimbursement is usually taxable in your hands.
05Your rights in brief
Notice terms come from your employment contract, and in India from shop and establishment or standing orders rules where they apply, which set minimum notice in many states. An employer cannot hold your relieving letter indefinitely for serving the agreed notice or paying the agreed buyout. Keep everything in writing, including the acceptance of your resignation and the agreed last working day.
