Everything about the Data Entry Test
Pair this test with the rest of the first round: springhire's candidate screening software adds a one-way video interview and resume scoring to the same candidate link, ranked in one report.
What is the Data Entry Test?
The Data Entry Test is built for hiring people who key, check and clean records. Accuracy questions compare source records with entries and ask candidates to spot transposed digits, missing characters and wrong fields. Formatting questions apply rules for dates, phone numbers, postcodes, state codes, names and email addresses. Spreadsheet questions cover sorting, filtering, removing duplicates, COUNTIF, blanks and text stored as numbers. Data handling questions cover what to do with incomplete forms, duplicate records, suspicious source data and confidential fields. It focuses on accuracy and judgment rather than typing speed.
What the Data Entry Test does not measure
It does not measure typing speed in words per minute. If raw keying speed matters for the role, add a separate typing check.
How does the Data Entry Test work?
The Data Entry Test is an auto-scored multiple-choice test. Each candidate answers 20 questions drawn at random from a bank of 60, so two candidates rarely see the same set, and most finish in 8 to 12 minutes. The questions are spread evenly across accuracy checking, formatting, spreadsheet basics and data handling, with a mix of easy, medium and hard items, and the report shows a score for each area as well as an overall score.
Why is the Data Entry Test important to employers?
Bad data is expensive to find later. A wrong digit in an account number, a date in the wrong format or a duplicate customer record can break billing, reporting and customer service for weeks. This test shows who checks against the source, follows formatting rules and asks when the data looks wrong.
