Everything about the Cashier Test
Pair this test with the rest of the first round: springhire's candidate screening software adds a one-way video interview and resume scoring to the same candidate link, ranked in one report.
What is the Cashier Test?
The Cashier Test is built for hiring cashiers and checkout staff. Cash handling questions cover counting change back, opening and closing a register and handling large bills. Checkout math questions cover totals, discounts, sales tax, change and price checks, using the arithmetic cashiers do all shift. Customer service questions cover long lines, price disputes, returns and upset customers. Loss prevention questions cover counterfeit notes, quick-change scams, refund fraud, age-restricted sales and what to do when you suspect theft without putting yourself at risk.
What the Cashier Test does not measure
It does not measure speed on a specific point-of-sale system. A short register walkthrough on day one covers that.
How does the Cashier Test work?
The Cashier Test is an auto-scored multiple-choice test. Each candidate answers 20 questions drawn at random from a bank of 60, so two candidates rarely see the same set, and most finish in 8 to 12 minutes. The questions are spread evenly across cash handling, checkout math, customer service and loss prevention, with a mix of easy, medium and hard items, and the report shows a score for each area as well as an overall score.
Why is the Cashier Test important to employers?
Small cashier errors add up across thousands of transactions, and a single scam can wipe out a day's margin. Good cashiers also shape whether customers come back. This test shows who counts accurately, keeps calm with a long line and recognizes the tricks that cost stores money.
